DURATION
Generally, each programme runs for 20 weeks and requires 10 hours per week attendance. Course delivery is flexible and depending on your availability, we can also provide an Intensive Healthcare English programme.
COURSE SYLLABUS
Medical Terminology (Basic/Advanced)
It is designed to introduce medical terminology and provide a working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes relating to the different body systems. Students become familiar with basic word structure, prefixes, suffixes, terms pertaining to the body as a whole, and those relating to general body systems and abbreviations. Emphasis is on spelling, definition and pronunciation.
Biology and Human Biology
This course introduces the student to the study of the cell, which holds the secrets unifying all life. Students examine cell structure, metabolism and genetics. The course studies diets and family hereditary patterns, linking both to the blueprint of life itself, DNA. Topics addressed include nutrition, cancer, immunology, the human genome, genetic engineering, and metabolic pathways.
Biology for Health Sciences
This course is ideal for the nursing applicants without a science background, but with care-giving experience, who plans to travel abroad. The course examines basic biological approaches, principles, and applications and the subject matter of Biology 1. Participants who require a more rigorous biology background should consider both Biology 1and 2.
Health Science Communications
This is an eight-week intensive course emphasizes four areas including active learning, reading, report writing and listening and speaking skills.
English for Health Sciences 1 and 2
This course is designed for ESL learners awho have career goals in health care but who need to improve their fluency, clear speech, self-confidence and listening skills, and expand their vocabulary. This course focuses on the language skills needed for those currently employed in Health Sciences programs or for entry into English for Health Sciences 2. Students may require one or two terms of half-time study to complete this level.
Reading and Study Skills
This course focuses on advanced reading skills. Students develop vocabulary and comprehension skills that are most relevant to the health science communications.
Writing Skills
This course focuses on advanced writing skills. Students will develop both their grammar and writing skills.
PRE-REQUISITES
Diploma in life sciences plus intermediate level English proficiency.
ASSESSMENTS
Participants will be given feedback in the form of a written report on all assessment tasks, a mid course report and a final course report. Additional feedback may also be given in the form of academic counseling by the class teacher. Assessment is based on satisfactory completion of set tasks and satisfactory attendance and participation in class activities. Please note that in order to be granted a certificate at the end of a course, students must have completed all tasks to a satisfactory level and must have a minimum 80 per cent attendance rate. |
