This program has been designed for life science professionals who seek an in-depth coverage of several important key biomedical science disciplines.

It is particularly useful for medical practitioners, nurses, medical biotechnologists, pharmacists, biomedical scientists, dentists, senior laboratory technicians, life science lecturers (academics) and others who work in the medical or health care fields.

WHO SHOULD DO THIS COURSE?

Biomedical science professionals who are seeking employment opportunities in English speaking countries or with foreign companies operating in the region.

Students going overseas to study a degree programmes in medicine or other healthcare areas would gain significant benefit from this course.

Professionals who are preparing communication materials for publication or presentation at a life science international symposium.

TRAINING APPROACH

The course is organized around topics relating to aspects of health science. In dealing with this material, students practice writing summaries and essays, leading seminar discussions, and doing oral presentations. Grammar is not overly taught, although students do work with grammatical constructions required for academic writing, and student errors common among second language learners.

The overall goal of the program is:
• To develop the English language competencies required to interact proficiently with colleagues in a health science context.
• To enhance your overall fluency and accuracy of English in both the receptive skills of reading and listening and the productive skills of speaking and writing.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The course delivery is similar to the approach that undergraduates would be familiar with from their previous studies with an emphasis on the acquisition of life science English vocabulary terms and developing fluency. The program provides an intensive coverage of the following disciplines:

• Human Anatomy and Physiology

• Pathology

• Medical Microbiology

• Pharmacology

• Internal Medicine

• Functional conversational language

• Abbreviations used in medical prescriptions


ASSESSMENTS

Your ability to incorporate reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as applicable to each topic covered will be assessed and then awarded a grade. Assessments will involve short exams (70%), written assignments (15%) and oral presentations (15%). This cumulative assessment approach will accurately reflect your language knowledge, competence and background knowledge.

DURATION

2 weeks x 15 hours per week for each subject.

Admission Requirements
The course assumes an enrolment standard of not less than IELTS 5.0. (Intermediate level)
This programme is most suited to professionals who hold a Diploma or higher qualification in the life sciences.
