BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONS) IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

  Code: VET_DBS

INTRODUCTION

New approaches to preventing, diagnosing and treating disease are increasingly dependent on an understanding of how the body functions at the molecular, cellular, organism and whole-body level. This detailed knowledge underpins strategies for gene and cell therapy, organ transplantation, and intervention by modulating cell function using recombinant products to detect and treat cancer, genetic and infectious diseases.

The equivalent provides a balanced range of science subjects that are making a significant contribution to modern medicine. The programme is designed for students who seek a career in the biomedical or medical fields other than as a practicing physician.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Career opportunities in the biomedical sciences are expanding rapidly in line with the growth in clinical science and biotechnology projects, around the world.

A Biomedical Science Diploma prepares graduates for progression into the final year of a degree programme at a number of foreign UK and Australian universities. Althernatively, students may gain employment in research, industrial laboratory, hospitals, universities and other research organizations. Non-research careers are available in health education, health promotion, pharmaceutical manufacturing and related medical diagnostics.

Typical employers include pathology companies, hospitals, health departments and Assumed knowledge: Chemistry and Mathematics. Students who have not completed Chemistry and/or Biology at the HSC are strongly recommended to enrol in bridging courses offered in February each year. Students without at least Mathematics including calculus may take a special Maths subject in the first year or consider early entry to complete this subject in Summer Session prior to commencement of the course.

Progression to Medical Education

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science programme may apply to Australian and UK medical schools upon successful completion of MCAT/GAMSAT test.

COURSE PROGRAM

If students opt to discontinue after year 2 a Diploma qualification will be awarded.

This is a prescribed program of study comprising core and optional subjects as set out below.
Progression requirements: Students must satisfactorily complete at least 128 credit points to qualify for the Higher Diploma in Biomedical Science. On completion of an additional three third year modules (24 credit points) on campus (overseas) the student will qualify for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences degree.
