A generalist nursing degree that takes students from foundational science through supervised clinical practice to nurse registration, with an embedded three-year milestone and a fourth Honours year of advanced study.

Introduction

This B.Sc. in Nursing degree introduces students to the ethos, culture, practice and evidence base of the discipline of nursing. Students develop an understanding of the needs of the people in their care, a working sense of ‘how nursing works’, and the personal and professional qualities associated with effective nursing practice. Practical knowledge (‘knowing how’) is treated as being of equal importance to formal knowledge (‘knowing that’), and students are encouraged throughout to bring their own developing clinical experience into their studies, so that knowledge in practice can be surfaced, examined and critiqued.

Students are supported in examining and evaluating different theoretical and analytic perspectives, applying critical reflection to their own growing practice-based knowledge and, where appropriate, questioning established conceptualisations of nursing theory and practice. The programme is designed to instil a habit of lifelong learning, so that students come to view their education as a continuing process that extends well beyond graduation.

Programme Overview

The overall aim of the programme is to stimulate and enable students to become compassionate, caring, competent and critically aware nurse practitioners, prepared for generalist practice across medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric and mental health nursing settings. The programme combines foundational science, nursing theory and extensive supervised clinical placement, so that students are equipped to register and practise as nurses on completion of the three-year milestone, with the option to continue into a fourth Honours year of advanced study, research and specialist practice.

Credits are weighted according to standard UK degree-credit conventions, with each year of study carrying 120 credits. Each taught module is completed alongside supervised clinical placement, building from foundational ward practice in Year 1 through to a final consolidation placement in Year 4.
